Apply Stay Tape to Lower Pieces

  1. From the right side, apply bias fusible stay tape to reinforce the neckline edges and armhole edges on the lower front and back pieces. While fusing, be careful not to stretch the edge. After fusing, compare the edge length to the paper pattern—the lengths should match.

Apply Stay Tape to Upper Pieces

  1. From the wrong side, fuse bias knit stay tape along the neckline and armhole edges on the upper front and back pieces. After fusing, compare the edge length to the paper pattern—the lengths should match.

Prepare Bottom Edges

  1. Finish the bottom edge on the upper and lower front and back pieces. Turn the bottom edge to the wrong side by 1 cm and press, then fold it over another 1 cm and press again. To make this step easier, you can sew a guide stitch 1 cm up from the bottom edge. Press the first 1 cm fold along that stitch, then press again for the second 1 cm fold. You can remove the guide stitch or leave it in.

Assemble Lower Side Seams

  1. Place the lower front and back pieces right sides together, matching the side seams. Pin in place. Stitch on the machine using a 1 cm (3/8 in) seam allowance, backstitching at the ends. Serge/overlock the seam allowances, sewing from the front piece side. Press the seam flat, then press the seam allowances toward the back piece.

Turn and Press Straps

  1. Trim the seam allowances down to 0.5 cm. Turn the straps right side out using a small hook or a thread and needle. Press. Position the seam with the roll turned slightly to one side of the straps.

Assemble Upper Side Seams

  1. Place the upper front and back pieces right sides together, matching the side seams. Pin in place. Stitch on the machine using a 1 cm (3/8 in) seam allowance, backstitching at the ends. Serge/overlock the seam allowances, sewing from the back piece side. Press the seam flat, then press the seam allowances toward the front. Press the side-seam allowances on the upper and lower sections in opposite directions to reduce bulk along the armhole edge.

Baste Straps to Upper Front

  1. On the right side of the upper front piece, position the strap pieces using the notches as guides. Pin in place. Stitch a temporary guide seam on the machine. Sew the line 0.7 cm from the raw edge.

Topstitch Neckline and Armholes

  1. Secure the seam allowances at the neckline and armholes to the lower layer of the top so it won't roll outward while worn. Mark matching reference points for where the stitching starts and ends. From each strap, measure 2.5 cm out to both sides. Press the seam allowances toward the lower layer and topstitch from the right side, catching the lower layer by 0.1-0.2 cm. At the beginning and end of each line of stitching, add neat backstitches.
