Tucking Serger Threads
- Use a crochet hook or a knit needle to tuck the loose serger threads at the bottom between the layers of fabric. Trim off any threads sticking out at the top.

Sewing the Inseams
- Turn the shorts legs inside out. Match the inseam edges, right sides facing in. Serge along the seam, sewing from the back piece side. Press the seam, then press the allowances toward the front piece.

Sewing the Side Seams
- Place the front and back pieces of the shorts right sides together, matching up the side seams. Pin the pieces together. Insert the pins from the back side. Place the pins parallel to the edge, about 2-3 cm away, so they won't get caught under the presser foot or the serger blade. Serge the seam with a 4-thread overlock, using a 0.7 cm seam allowance. Stitch from the back piece side. Press the seam, then press the allowances toward the front piece.

Sewing the Waistband Ends
- Fold the waistband piece with the right sides together, aligning the short edges. Sew the short edges together using either an overlock or a sewing machine. The seam should be 0.7 cm wide. Be sure to leave an opening for the elastic, about 3 cm. Secure the beginning and end of each stitch. Press the seam flat, then make a small notch along the fold line, stopping about 2 mm before the overlock stitch. Press the seam allowances open in opposite directions.

Preparing the Waistband (Pressing)
- Fold the waistband piece in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press it flat.

Sewing the Crotch Seam
- Turn one shorts leg inside out and leave the other right side out. Place one leg inside the other so the right sides are facing each other. Pin along the crotch seam. Sew together using a serger. You can stitch from either side. Press the seam. Next, on the straight sections of the shorts, press the seam allowances so the right side of the overlock stitch faces you.

Finishing the Waistband Inner Edge
- The opening for the elastic will be on the inside of the waistband once finished. Using an overlock machine, finish the long edge on the inside of the waistband piece, stitching from the right side of the fabric.

Securing the Waistband
- Press the seam allowances toward the waistband. Fold the waistband along the pressed line. Turn the waistband to the wrong side along the pressed edge, pin in place, and baste by hand. Sew the waistband by machine, stitching from the right side into the ditch of the waistband seam. Make sure the inner edge of the waistband is caught in the stitching along the entire seam. Press.

Closing the Elastic Opening
- Close the opening for the elastic using invisible hand stitches.

Inserting the Elastic
- Pre-shrink the elastic band. Thread the elastic through the waistband. Try on to determine the correct length. Join the ends of the elastic to form a loop, placing the edges together, and secure with a zigzag stitch and backstitching.

Attaching the Waistband to the Shorts
- Place the waistband piece and the shorts right sides together, aligning the waistband edge with the top of the shorts. Pin in place, matching the waistband seam with the back center seam. Align the markings on the waistband with the side seams of the shorts and the front center seam. Place the waistband on top with the side that doesn't have overlock stitching facing the shorts. Attach the waistband using the overlocker. Sew from either side.

Topstitching the Waistband (Second Line)
- Sew the second line 1.5 cm below the first. Where the seam meets in a circle, secure it neatly with a backstitch. Press the waistband.

Hemming the Shorts
- With the shorts turned right side out, sew a topstitch along the bottom edge, 0.5 cm from the hem (or the width of the presser foot). Secure the seam neatly where the ends meet. Press with an iron.

Topstitching the Waistband (First Line)
- Distribute the gathers evenly along the waistband. Pin in place at the side seams, as well as at the center front and back of the shorts. Sew the first stitch 1.5 cm from the top edge of the waistband. As you sew, gently stretch the waistband between the pins. At the point where the seam meets to form a circle, secure it neatly with a backstitch.
