  1. Pin the side edges of the front lining and back lining together, matching the edges and placing right sides facing each other.

6. Stitch side seams

  1. Stitch and serge the side seams of the front and back at the same time on a 4-thread overlock. Seam allowance: 0.7 cm.

5. Pin side edges

  1. Pin the side edges of the front and back pieces together, matching the edges and placing right sides facing each other.

9. Sew lining side seams

  1. Sew the side seams of the front and back lining pieces, leaving a 4–5 cm opening in one side seam. Seam allowance: 0.7 cm.

11. Pin outer top to lining

  1. Pin the outer top to the lining along the upper edge, matching the raw edges and side seams, with right sides facing each other.

12. Cut upper elastic

  1. Cut a 1.0 cm-wide elastic to the required length. The recommended elastic length is indicated on the front pattern piece.

13. Pin upper elastic

  1. Pin the elastic to the top edge of the top, placing it from the upper side and spreading it evenly along the full length, overlapping the elastic ends by 1.0 cm.

15. Turn and press top edge

  1. Turn right side out and press the top edge of the top, forming a slight roll from the front and back outer pieces.

14. Finish top edge

  1. Finish the top edge of the top with the lining, while simultaneously stitching on the elastic all the way around using a 4-thread serger. Tuck the overlock thread tails into the cover-stitching line using a hook.

16. Pin lower edge

  1. Place the lining and the top together with wrong sides facing. Pin the lower edge of the outer top to the lining edge, turning a small section so the right sides face inward. Pin the edges through the open section at the hem.

19. Press bottom edge

  1. Press the bottom edge of the top, forming a slight roll to the inside from the outer fabric on the front and back pieces.

17. Serge lower edge

  1. Serge the lower edge of the top shell to the lining edge on a 4-thread overlock, gently stretching and smoothing the seam allowances all the way around. Use a hook to tuck the serger thread tails into the coverstitch line.

18. Turn right-side out

  1. Turn the top right-side out through the opening left in the lining’s side seam.

22. Thread bottom elastic

  1. CUT A 2.0 CM-WIDE ELASTIC TO THE REQUIRED LENGTH. THE RECOMMENDED ELASTIC LENGTH IS INDICATED ON THE FRONT PATTERN PIECE. THREAD THE ELASTIC INTO THE CASING THROUGH THE OPENING LEFT.

21. Topstitch casing

  1. TOPSTITCH ALONG THE MARKED CASING LINE, LEAVING A 2.0 CM OPENING AT THE SIDE SEAM AREA.

20. Mark casing line

  1. MARK THE CASING TOPSTITCH LINE ALONG THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE TOP, SETTING IT 2.2 CM IN FROM THE EDGE.

23. Secure elastic ends

  1. SECURE THE ELASTIC ENDS BY OVERLAPPING THE CUT EDGES BY 1.0 CM. MAKE SURE THE ELASTIC INSIDE DOESN’T GET TWISTED!

  1. Hand-sew the opening left in the lining’s side seam using invisible stitches.
