Pinning Shoulder Seams

  1. Place the front and back pieces right sides together, aligning the shoulder edges. Pin the pieces together from the back side. Insert the pins parallel to the shoulder seam, about 3–4 cm from the edge. This position makes it easy to sew the pieces together on the serger.

Overlapping Neck Facing Ends

  1. Arrange the ends of the facing as shown in the photo, then pin all four layers together, making sure the edges line up. Be sure that, ideally, the finished neckline overlap should go from right to left.

Staystitching Neck Facing

  1. Sew a staystitch on your sewing machine, keeping the seam 0.5 cm away from the edges. Don’t forget to backstitch at the beginning and end for extra hold. This step will make working with the neckline much easier.

Sewing Neck Facing

  1. Sew the facing to the neckline using a serger. Start and finish the seam right at the neckline corner. Check to make sure the stitching is secure—there shouldn’t be a hole at the point of the V-neck where the notch was made. Press the seam, then press it toward the sweater.

Pinning Neckline Corner

  1. Begin pinning the neckline from the corner, align the edges of the neckline and facing, and secure them with pins. Before attaching on the serger, it's a good idea to secure the corner with your sewing machine.

Pinning Entire Neckline

  1. Pin the entire facing to the neckline, using the notches as a guide. For best results, pin the facing from the sweater side so you can keep an eye on the V-neck corner as you sew.

Sewing Side and Sleeve Seams

  1. Place the front and back pieces right sides together, matching the side seams and sleeve seams. Align the notches and pin from the back side. Sew the side seams and sleeve seams in one continuous line with an overlocker, stitching from the back side. Press the seam to set it, then press it toward the front.

Basting Hems

  1. Refresh the pressing of the seam allowances along the hem and sleeves (3 cm). Topstitch the hem and sleeve allowances using a twin needle. You can also secure the seam allowances with a zigzag stitch set to a frequency of 2–3 and a width of 3.5. Step-by-step guide for finishing hems with a twin needle: Baste the seam allowances using contrasting thread, keeping 1 mm from the edge.

Attaching Sleeves

  1. Place the sleeves and the jumper right sides together along the armhole, matching the notches. Pin from the sleeve side. Be careful not to mix up the right and left sleeves—use the notches as your guide. Sew the sleeve in with an overlocker, stitching from the sleeve side. Press the seam, then press it toward the jumper.

Twin Needle Topstitching

  1. Stitch a line using a twin needle on your sewing machine. Sew the line on the right side of the sweater. Where the stitching forms a circle, secure it with a backstitch. During sewing, your hand-basted stitches should serve as a guide—make sure the basting goes perfectly between both needles. It's a good idea to test your stitch on a scrap piece first. On some machines, you may need to loosen the upper thread tension a bit to get a better result. Remove the basting stitches. Press the hems with an iron.
