Cuffs and waistbands

  1. Begin by folding the cuff in half lengthwise, with the wrong side facing in. Pin it together, matching the notches and seam line. Next, sew a temporary straight stitch about 2–3 mm from the edge, making sure the edges stay even. As you sew, gently stretch the cuff if needed and remove the pins as you go. When finished, press the cuff carefully—avoid stretching or misshaping it.

  1. First, fold the waistband in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together. Pin it in place, matching the notches and seam line. Then, sew a straight securing stitch 2–3 mm from the raw edges, making sure the edges are even as you go. As you sew, gently stretch the waistband if needed and remove the pins. When finished, carefully press the waistband, being mindful not to stretch or distort it.

  1. Attach the waistband to the garment using an overlock stitch. Wrap the waistband around the lower edge of the garment, right sides facing each other. Align the waistband seam with the left side seam. Match the notches and secure with pins. Even out the edges, then sew along the waistband edge on the overlock, gently stretching the waistband to match the length of the bottom edge. Press the waistband seam, pressing the allowances toward the garment. Topstitch the seam at 0.5 cm.

Collar

  1. Fold the collar in half with the wrong sides facing in. Align the notches and seam, then pin them together. Match up the edges and sew a strengthening stitch on a straight-stitch machine, keeping 2–3 mm from the edge, removing the pins and gently stretching the collar as you sew. Carefully press the collar, taking care not to stretch it out.

  1. Turn the garment inside out. Place the collar into the neckline, right sides together. Align the collar seam with the mark on the left sleeve. Match the remaining collar marks with the corresponding neckline seams and marks, securing them with pins. Make sure the edges are even, then stitch the collar to the neckline on the overlocker from the collar side, removing pins as you sew.

Collar

  1. Flip the collar right side out. With your iron, press the seam allowance down toward the garment. Add a decorative topstitch 5 mm from the neckline seam, moving in a circle from one shoulder seam back to itself. If needed, use hand basting first. Important: The topstitch should be present on both the front and back. Give the garment a final press.
