Hand hemming
Finishing the bottom edge of a garment using invisible hand stitches.
Where it is used
Leveling the Hem
p. 14- With the dress on a person or dress form, use a ruler to measure and mark a level hemline from the floor up.
Marking Bottom Hem
p. 5- On the inside of the shirt, mark a line 3 cm up from the bottom edge.
Basting Bottom Hem
p. 5- Fold the bottom edge to the inside along the marked line and press it. Secure the allowance with hand stitches, keeping 0.1–0.2 cm away from the edge.
10. Stitching bottom hem
p. 10- Stitch along the bottom hem of the T-shirt using a coverstitch machine. If you don’t have a coverstitch machine, you can serge the raw edges first and then sew the hem on a regular sewing machine. Pull the thread tails on the wrong side through the coverstitch using a hook.
Stitch Hem
p. 8- Use a double needle to stitch on the sewing machine. Sew from the right side of the dress, making sure to secure the stitches at the beginning and end. During the sewing process, your hand-basted stitches will act as a guide—basting stitches should run exactly between both needles. Remove all basting stitches once finished. Press the seam flat.
Hand Hemming
p. 10- Hem the bottom of the dress by hand using invisible stitches. Press to finish.
Hand Stitch Hems
p. 12- Hand stitch the hem of the sweater and sleeves using invisible stitches. Press gently with an iron.
Securing Hem
p. 11- Secure the hem allowance by hand using an invisible stitch. Press with an iron.
Blind Hemming
p. 13- Stitch the hem allowances with a hand blind hem stitch.
Hemming the Dress
p. 13- Stitch a decorative seam along the bottom of the sundress using a flat seam machine. Allowance is 2.5 cm. Conceal the threads in the seam lining on the reverse side using a hook.
Ironing Hem Stitch
p. 14- Iron the decorative stitch along the hem of the dress.
18. Stitch hem
p. 8- Stitch the hem of the long sleeve with a coverstitch machine. Use a hook to tuck in the thread ends along the seam.
