Patch pockets

Pockets created by sewing a lined fabric piece onto the outside of the front jacket panels.

  1. On the front piece, make diagonal clips (notches), stopping 0.1 cm short of the end of the placket attachment stitching lines.

Step 2: Sewing the Pockets with Flaps - Marking & Preparing

  1. Transfer the pocket placement lines to the front coat pieces using chalk. Fold the pocket frame pieces right sides together and stitch along the short sides. Turn right side out, press, and align on the pocket placement lines.

  1. On the right side of the front panels, mark the placement for the patch pocket. Keep in mind that the marking on the panel is smaller than the actual pocket. The panel features lines indicating where the pocket seam allowances will go.

Assembling Pockets - Step 2

  1. Fold the pocket along the crease with the right sides facing each other, then align the top edges and the lining. Sew around, leaving a 3–5 cm opening at the bottom edge for turning.

  1. Place the pocket and the pocket lining right sides together, aligning the top edge. Stitch along the edge. Press the seam allowance toward the lining.

  1. Place the pocket on the front piece, following the markings. Baste it with diagonal stitches or secure with pins. Stitch the pocket close to the edge and add horizontal bar tacks at the pocket opening.

Turning and Finishing Pockets

  1. Trim the corners of the seam allowances. Where the edges are curved, trim the allowance down to 0.5 cm. Turn the pocket right side out through the opening and press it. Hand stitch the open area closed. Prepare the second pocket in the same way.
