Shirring

Multiple parallel rows of gathering made using elastic thread in the bobbin to create a stretchy, gathered panel.

Stitch a double row of gathering along the top edge of the ruffle. The start and end of the stitches should align with the notches on the top edge of the front panel ruffle. Place the first stitch line 0.8 cm from the edge, and the second one 2-3 mm away from the first, towards the edge. The stitch length for this gathering should be 4 mm.

Gather the gathering stitch along the ruffle to the size indicated on the pattern for the front and back ruffles.

Sew two parallel gathering lines along the edges of the ruffle, leaving a 0.5 cm margin. Place the second gathering line 0.7-0.8 cm away from the edge. Set the stitch length to 4-5 mm.

Gather the stitch to the size indicated on the ruffle pattern. Distribute the gathers evenly along the entire length of the ruffle.

Sew two parallel gathering lines along the curved edges of the lower section, starting from the top notch to the side edge, with a 0.5 cm margin from the edge. Place the second gathering line with a 0.7-0.8 cm margin from the edge. Set the stitch length to 4-5 mm.

Stitch along the marked lines on the center back piece using elastic thread, ensuring to secure the ends. Wind the elastic thread onto a bobbin and adjust the thread tension on a separate fabric swatch. If you require a gathering length of 21 cm, start by laying the first stitch to achieve a gathering of 28 cm. Since each subsequent stitch reduces the width by 1.0 cm, increase the size of the first gathering stitch accordingly. Total number of stitches: 7.
