Strap construction

The process of sewing, trimming, and turning narrow fabric tubes to create clean-finished shoulder straps.

Where it is used

  1. Fold each strap in half lengthwise with the right side in, sew along the long edges, turn right side out. Press the seam open using a slanting stitch, smoothing allowances. Optionally topstitch. Secure one short edge of the strap by stitching or hand-sewing with a hidden stitch. Press.

Stitch Strap Pieces

  1. Place the strap pieces right sides together, matching the long edge. Pin in place or baste. Stitch on the machine with a 1 cm seam allowance, backstitching at the ends.

Turn and Press Straps

  1. Trim the seam allowances down to 0.5 cm. Turn the straps right side out using a small hook or a thread and needle. Press. Position the seam with the roll turned slightly to one side of the straps.

Fit and Thread Straps

  1. Do a fitting and decide on the strap length. Thread the straps through the openings left at the back and pin them in place.

Step 5: Pressing strap seam allowances

  1. Press the seam allowance for the strap edge on the front piece to one side. And on the lining—press it to the opposite side.
