Hemming
The process of finishing the bottom edge of the skirt, using a 6 cm allowance in this pattern.
Where it is used
Securing the Wrap Front
p. 5- Sew a securing stitch across the overlapped bottom edge, keeping 0.5-0.7 cm from the raw edge.
Finishing Skirt Side Seams
p. 5- Finish the side seams of the front and back skirt pieces with an overlock, stitching from the right side, and press.
Attaching Skirt to Waistband
p. 8- Place the skirt and bodice right sides together, matching the waist seam. Fold the inner waistband out of the way, pin, and sew with a 1 cm seam allowance.
Securing Inner Waistband
p. 8- Fold the inner waistband edge with the pressed allowance so it overlaps the waistband-to-skirt seam by 0.2 cm. Pin and baste in place.
Trimming the Hem
p. 14- Trim off any excess fabric along the marked line to ensure a perfectly level hem.
Leveling the Hem
p. 14- With the dress on a person or dress form, use a ruler to measure and mark a level hemline from the floor up.
10. Stitching bottom hem
p. 10- Stitch along the bottom hem of the T-shirt using a coverstitch machine. If you don’t have a coverstitch machine, you can serge the raw edges first and then sew the hem on a regular sewing machine. Pull the thread tails on the wrong side through the coverstitch using a hook.
Baste Hem Allowance
p. 8- Refresh the crease of the hem allowance (3 cm) at the bottom of the dress. Secure the hem allowance with a row of stitching using a twin needle. You can also secure the allowances by sewing a zigzag stitch with a frequency of 2–3 and a width of 3.5. For finishing hems with a twin needle: Baste the allowances using a row of contrasting thread, 1 mm from the edge of the allowance.
Topstitch Slit
p. 9- Topstitch the seam allowances along the slit on the right side, keeping 0.5 cm from the edge. Start stitching exactly at the hem seam and finish at the hem seam on the other side. Secure the beginning and end of the stitch with a backstitch. Press to finish.
Pressing Hem Allowance
p. 10- Press the hem allowance of 3.0 cm to the inside.
Finishing Raw Edges
p. 10- Try on the dress and decide on the length for both the dress and sleeves. Finish the lower edges of the dress and sleeves with a serger. Stitch from the right side. Press to set.
Hand Hemming
p. 10- Hem the bottom of the dress by hand using invisible stitches. Press to finish.
