Shoulder seam

The seam joining the front and back panels at the shoulders, sewn at a 1.0 cm allowance.

Where it is used

Secure Left Shoulder Seam

  1. Swap out the twin needle on your machine for a stretch needle. Fold the seam allowances on the left shoulder toward the front, pull the overlock thread tail, and from the right side, secure it with a bar tack about 0.5 cm from the shoulder seam. The bar tack should be 3–4 stitches long. You can also secure the seam allowances by hand from the inside if you prefer. Press with an iron.

  1. Sew the shoulder seam, aligning the edges and the binding seams, with the right sides facing each other. Allow for a 0.7 cm seam allowance.

  1. Place the back and front pieces right sides together, joining at the shoulder seams. Pin or baste. Stitch on the machine with a 1 cm seam allowance, using backstitches (reinforcement).

Assembling Shoulder Seams

  1. Place the front and back pieces right sides together, aligning the shoulder edges. Pin from the back side. Sew together with an overlock machine, stitching from the back side. Press the seam, then fold the allowances toward the front and press again.
