Shoulder Seam Joining

Method of joining shoulder seams by sandwiching the front shoulder between the back and back facing.

  1. Gently pull the lower threads to gather the shoulder seam to match the length indicated on your paper pattern. Distribute the gathers evenly and tie off the thread ends.

  1. Place the front and back bodice pieces right sides together, aligning the shoulder edges. Pin and sew with a 1 cm seam allowance. Finish the seam allowances with a serger and press them toward the back.

Sew Left Shoulder Seam

  1. Stitch the LEFT shoulder seam of the dress with a serger. Sew from the back side. Press, then press the seam allowances toward the front.

Secure Left Shoulder Seam

  1. Swap out the twin needle on your machine for a stretch needle. Fold the seam allowances on the left shoulder toward the front, pull the overlock thread tail, and from the right side, secure it with a bar tack about 0.5 cm from the shoulder seam. The bar tack should be 3–4 stitches long. You can also secure the seam allowances by hand from the inside if you prefer. Press with an iron.

Assembling and Reinforcing Shoulder Seams

  1. Place the front and back pieces together with right sides facing, aligning along the shoulder edges. Pin or baste, then sew the shoulder seams. Place silicone tape along the shoulder seam allowance, serge the seam and tape together, and press the seam allowances toward the back.

Stitching Shoulder Seams

  1. Place the back and front pieces right sides together, aligning the shoulder edges. Pin from the back side. Serge/Stitch on the overlocker, placing the stitch on the back side. Press lightly, then press the seam allowances towards the front.
