Bar tack

A series of tight, short stitches used to reinforce high-stress areas like pocket openings.

Where it is used

Secure Left Shoulder Seam

  1. Swap out the twin needle on your machine for a stretch needle. Fold the seam allowances on the left shoulder toward the front, pull the overlock thread tail, and from the right side, secure it with a bar tack about 0.5 cm from the shoulder seam. The bar tack should be 3–4 stitches long. You can also secure the seam allowances by hand from the inside if you prefer. Press with an iron.

Securing Pocket Openings

  1. Sew vertical bar tacks to secure the pocket opening. Stitch 5 mm from the pocket's side edge. Each bar tack should be 2.5 cm long.

Front Assembly - Step 10

  1. Make neat bar tacks perpendicular to the pocket opening. Each bar tack should start exactly at the princess seam and align with the bar tacks on the pocket opening topstitching.

Pocket Construction - Step 5

  1. Topstitch the pocket opening, keeping the stitch line 5 mm away from the facing seam. At the beginning and end, without breaking the stitch, sew bar tacks perpendicular to the pocket opening.

Tacking Pocket Corners

  1. Place the front and back pieces of the pants right sides together, lining them up at the side seams near the pocket. Pin them from the front side, making sure the pocket's guide points match. At the corner of the pocket opening, sew a bar tack with your machine. The stitch should run precisely along the corner without catching the pocket entry. Each bar tack should be 3-4 stitches long.

Attaching Pockets

  1. Place the pocket on the front piece, following the markings. Baste it with diagonal stitches or secure with pins. Stitch the pocket close to the edge and add horizontal bar tacks at the pocket opening.
